WORLD MASTERS INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS, Torun, Poland, March 26-27
Britons found medals hard to come by in the first two days of competition in Poland at the venue that will host the 2026 World Indoor Championships.
On day one, Britains only gold went to Tony OBrien won a competitive M50 3000m in 8:52.75 as he defeated Spains Julio Bardavio by less than half a second.
M50 Craig Beecham and M40 Neil Barton (long jump), M55 Dave Cowlishaw and W80 Betty Stracey (3000m) and W40 Marianne Berndt (shot) all won silvers on the first day.
Also taking a silver was Ian Williamson in the M40 3000m and not having a seeded time, he ran in the slower heat and ran 8:44.15 but Antonino Liuzzo went less than two seconds quicker in the next race.
Swede Carl-Erik Sarndal set a world M85 high jump record of 1.27m as he took gold by a huge 16 centimetres with a second time clearance having already set a 1.23m record at a previous height. He already holds the M75 and M80 records.
Brazilian Sumiko Yamakawa Imoto set a W85 world discus record of 21.22m surpassing the old mark of 19.49m as she also exceeded all the W80 competitors.
She broke the previous mark with five of her six throws and achieved the record distance in both the fifth and sixth round. On the second day she bettered the W85 shot record with a 8.26m throw.
Norwegian Arild Busturud improved the M75 weight record from 19.38m to 20.99m.
Three-time global silver medallist James Beckford won the M45 long jump title with 6.66m.
The second day saw Norman Baillie win the M75 cross-country which started at 8am and he also led Britain to team gold.
Britain also won a W55 team gold.
David Annetts missed out on 3000m walk gold by just 0.46 of a second as Spains Miguel Angel Carvajal Ortega pipped him for M55 gold with a 13:26.31 clocking.
Canadian all-time great Karla del Grande turned 70 after the competition started and had to compete in the W65 400m race in which she already holds the world record of 68.39 and her 71.34 heat was a W70 record.
